From the Author
This book is an investment in your remodeling success. It will spare you from 'horror story' results, because you'll avoid the three critical remodeling mistakes (a savings easily worth tens of thousands). You can now avoid the headaches and uncertainty that plague those who remodel without an insider's advice.
I believe that every homeowner should enjoy their remodeling experience, and I'll show you how that can happen with your project.
The very crux of remodeling is this: keeping a house in shape to serve our needs, perhaps adding-on or changing a home's features as our family grows and our needs change.
Are you ready to begin your remodeling adventure?
From the Inside Flap
On the surface, it's totally logical why I am writing this book and teaching companion classes to help homeowners master the remodeling process. After all, I am a residential architect and I spent the last twenty-four years in the remodeling industry. So nobody knows more about educating homeowners about 'how-to' remodel their homes.
But how I became the remodeling expert I am today is the real story. For years I was an excellent residential architect, but I could never get my designs to hit my clients' budgets. I would devise clever solutions to their remodeling problems, but their contractor's prices were always 20 to 50 percent above their stated budget. It was a devastating experience for me, and a crushing one for the clients as well. I watched far too many clients fall in love with my designs, buying into the dream I had created for them, only to have that dream destroyed by too-high price tags.
I ultimately admitted to myself that my inability to accurately estimate the cost of my designs was a major failing that required a remedy. When I left the faculty at Texas A&M, I returned to Maryland. But, this time I didn't work in an architect's office. I chose to design projects for a remodeling contractor who taught me how to estimate residential remodeling costs. Since then, I've never looked back. I fell in love with design-build remodeling. Fifteen or twenty families a year could now dramatically improve their quality of life using my remodeling designs. All because I had learned to accurately estimate my designs, and how to design within a clients' budget.
Today, I understand both the architectural side of the remodeling coin, and the truth of goings on inside the remodeling world. I've witnessed every mistake a homeowner can make when remodeling. In contrast, I can help any homeowner to properly prepare for their unique remodeling journey and avoid the common mistakes and pitfalls made by so many others. The process I teach saves homeowners time, energy, countless mistakes, and thousands of dollars.
And that's the reason that this book is in your hands today. Instead of only helping fifteen families to remodel each year, I now help thousands of families achieve remodeling success, which is gratifying beyond words.

I needed this book a year ago!
By Linda Lindquist
While driving this evening, I listened to the free audio book that was a bonus with the book. The book itself will be a great reference for planning future remodeling projects.
Last year we remodeled a master bedroom / bathroom / walk-in closet and a kitchen. The bedroom project was an utter disaster because of the unprofessional contractor that we hired. We had to hire a second contractor to bail us out and finish the project. Because he could not know what the first person had done, we finished the project at time and materials cost, which was more than originally budgeted. Thankfully, w are happy with the end result. But I wish I had the wisdom of Jim Molinelli's professional advice before I had started on that project.

Awesome insider info on home remodeling
By Michael Wilkinson
This book is great because it comes at just the right time for me. I'm planning to move and buy a new house later this year. Jim puts so much information in this book. Now, I feel like an insider. After reading it, I now know I made the right choice to wait to remodel my first house. You don't know what you need to know until a book like this comes along.
