About the Author
David A. Madsen is an emeritus faculty member in drafting technology and the Autodesk Premier Training Center at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Oregon, where he also served as an instructor and department chairperson for nearly 30 years. In addition to his community college experience, David served as a drafting technology instructor at Centennial High School in Gresham, Oregon. He is a former member of the American Design and Drafting Association (ADDA) Board of Directors and was honored by the ADDA with Director Emeritus status at the annual conference in 2005. David is an Autodesk Authorized Author and has extensive experience in mechanical drafting, architectural design and drafting, and building construction. He holds a master of education degree in vocational administration and a bachelor of science degree in industrial education. David P. Madsen is president of Engineering Drafting & Design, Inc., and vice president of Madsen Designs Inc. Dave provides drafting and design consultation and training for all disciplines and is an Autodesk Authorized Author. He has been a professional design drafter since 1996 and has extensive experience in a variety of drafting, design, and engineering disciplines. Dave has provided drafting and computer-aided design and drafting instruction to secondary and postsecondary learners since 1999, and he has considerable curriculum and program coordination and development experience. Dave holds a master of science degree in educational policy, foundations, and administrative studies, with a specialization in postsecondary, adult, and continuing education. He also holds a bachelor of science degree in technology education and an associate of science degree in general studies and drafting technology. Incredible amount of important info and practices
Amazing book, I just had to buy this after reading the reviews and previewing the material, despite the typical jarring school textbook price. I was nowhere near disappointed to my heightened expectations of what I thought this text would contain. The sheer amount of useful real-world applicable content and examples completely justifies the cost for me.
I am no longer a student but a Mechanical Engineer going on 4 yeas for an international automotive equipment manufacturer. I really wish I had had a class using this book or access to a single text that had this much critical information for design oriented engineers and draftsmen. I can now get rid of those old college cad and drafting texts I've been hanging onto for occasional reference because between this book and the machinists' handbook, I have 99% of the tables, standards, drafting tips/explanations, symbol formats, design considerations and reference material that I need to access on a daily basis as an engineer. Both of these books are a staple on my desk and I show them off to the other engineers every chance I get.
Every engineer has a different set of skills, experience and areas in need of improvement. Each develop different levels of focus as the systems we deal with are extremely varying in their type of technology, mechanical methods implemented, tolerance and design considerations.
The first 9 sections are geared towards the basics - introducing the fundamentals of design, drafting and manufacturing materials/processes. I honestly did not read much here, only skimmed over. The latter majority of the book explores topics more advanced and in depth; these are areas I am trying to improve on. There are several times the text gives good examples of good vs. bad practices in drafting. Some of these I was not taught correctly and this inherited some incorrect habits that I am trying to work on. Here are some of my favorite sections/topics I found helpful in my experience as a mechanical engineer:
-dimensioning and tolerancing
-fasteners and springs
-GD&T (geom. dim & tolerancing)
-mechanisms, linkages, cams, gears and bearings
-welding processes and representations
-precision sheet metal drafting
-electrical and electronic drafting
-industrial process piping
-HVAC (heating, ventilation, and AC)
-and the some 28 appendices of tables and reference material! :) :)
I have attached pics of the extensive weld symbol explanation, structural I beam specs and appendix page of C channel and pipe specifications.
I am always striving to be a better engineer; this text is a definite step towards filling in the gaps in my limited knowledge. I am completely satisfied with the amount and detail of content supplied in this fantastic book. Recommended for any drafting/design student or engineer wanting to improve upon their skills/knowledge.

It's best for learning the history of drafting and manual drafting ...

I needed this for a class where I learned SolidWorks 2016. This book is very generic when it comes to teaching software, offering little to no help, then again, this edition is REALLY dated. It's best for learning the history of drafting and manual drafting techniques. Obviously, it's very dry and boring.

A plethora of information, and a good resource after you take class.

This is an excellent book for learning design, CAD stuff, dimensioning, tolerancing, and everything in between. My teacher chose this book because it is such a wealth of information. The writing in this book is also reader friendly. A good reference after you finish the classes the book is required for.
I'm holding onto this book even though I could get a decent amount of money if I were to resell.
