My interest in all things architectural began decades ago when I wrote my first book on log homes. It was given further fuel when I teamed up with photographer Peter Christopher on another book, Log Homes: Classics of the North. To our delight, Peter and I found that people who design, build and live in beautiful, wellcrafted homes are extremely interesting and a pleasure to be around.
We also discovered that all the things that make a home really work from an aesthetic point of view -- in other words, the details -- were just as interesting. Why do the arches, columns and wrought-iron work of one house combine together to make it a magnificent showpiece, but on another house look simply awful? How can massive pieces of stone look sensational in one house and unbelievably tacky in the one next door? We wanted to know how the details work and what inspires their use.
In a nice case of serendipity, we ran across some very interesting trends -- sea changes, really -- that we wanted to communicate and try to interpret. Because we North Americans, and the world at large, are becoming much more sophisticated in terms of how we live and where we do that living, how our homes look and function is becoming very important to us all. Hundreds of billions of dollars are being spent every year by people renovating their homes in North America. Our interest in architectural details is apparently being shared by just about everyone else on the continent. Why not a book that looks at this wave of activity from a uniquely North American perspective?
The passion that we believe infuses this book comes from the countless architects, designers, home owners, artisans and manufacturers whose homes and work grace these pages. Their interpretations are as variable as are their personalities. Many of the quotes you'll find throughout this book come from conversations with these artists, each contributing his or her own take on residential design and decoration. They have explored all manner of extraordinary ideas and have access to sources not all homeowners might find in the course of a trip to a regular neighborhood building center. We are fortunate in enjoying the benefit of these experts' ideas and counsel -- in photographs and in words -- plus access to many of the sources where they go to get their materials.
What we have not tried to do is come up with a definitive work on all architectural styles from an exhaustive academic or historical perspective. This book is a source and style guide designed to provide inspiration, ideas and useful information. We wanted to share all of the possibilities that we found as we crisscrossed North America in search of the best and most interesting in architectural details. There are plenty of ideas in these pages to inspire those who want to remodel their home or, dream of dreams, build their own. We also wanted to provide a look at the available products and materials needed to make that dream reality -- the best of the best in high-end, hard-to-find or simply unique products. The Books section at the end of each Details chapter contains only a very small sampling of some of the many unique products available. Take inspiration from these and turn to the Sources listing at the end of the book for contact information and web addresses for almost a thousand suppliers, manufacturers, artisans, designers and architects. They will lead you to places you might never have imagined.
It is to celebrate this adventurous spirit that this book was conceived. We hope you will be as inspired in reading it as we were in producing it.

This is a wonderful resource book for architects, interior designers and homeowners that are interested in designing architecturally interesting homes and spaces within homes. The book is over 500 pages in length and is loaded with interesting photographs. Topics include exterior and interior styles, exterior details, doors & windows, floors, walls & ceilings, architectural details, light and heat, kitchen fittings, bathroom fixtures, hardware and more. It covers a wide variety of materials, ideas and resources. My favorite sections are those on doors, entranceways, garage doors, staircases and ceilings.
