Editorial Reviews

National Building Cost Manual is an excellent book and CD combination. Better than competitors books costing multiples more. Descriptions of the building types and different qualities provide much more detail on what is in the estimates. Optional additions are great. The included CD makes this an exceptional value.

By Jim M
I purchased this thinking it would be newer and a revision of the 2010 edition. It was exactly the same page for page with the exception of the numbers increased by a factor that can be easily looked up (construction cost index). I was disappointed because this book could easily be so much more. They should add other occupancy classifications and components, for example. Within the limits of what it does cover it is a reasonable way for coming up with replacement cost for a building. However, you must have some experience to use this manual and understand building construction, specifications and plans. In the end you must compare your figures with some similar building construction costs in the area to be sure there isn't anything you missed. The more specific you can be about adding costs for building components and adjustments for height, quality, and shape of the building the better your end result will be. Consider this book a tool and just part of the job of determining the final building cost.

4Worth the money...
By Some Guy
I've used this for years and before that used Marshall & Swift. This is reasonably close to M&S at a fraction of the cost. Quarterly updates to the software but the not paper updates like M&S. Which is no big deal, I use the software anyways. I don't feel like either is all that reliable and both are higher (sometimes significantly so) than actual costs. But, it's understandable that prices will fluctuate and can vary in a competitive market.

5a must have for people looking to build a house
By Joshua Guthrie
This book is a must have for those planning to build a house. Lets you decide what trade offs you want to make and give you something that is hard to come by, pricing. Granted, I think you should treat it as a rough order a magnitude if you are a novice, but it is better than shooting in the dark, and is an insight into the industry.
